Q: I plan to bring my parents over to live permanently in the USA in a few years and we cannot proceed with plans until we know if they can be covered medically at all before they would qualify for Medicare or if the cost would be at a level they could afford; hence we need some idea before we proceed with green card applications etc. Please advise. A: Immigration laws require the sponsors of immigrants as permanent residents of the United States to be financially responsible for the new permanent residents including the cost of medical care for at least 5 continuous years. After 5 years, green card holders 65 years of age or older may apply for Medicare. A major health plan coverage which includes doctor visits and hospital stays is recommended for the period of 5 years of residency in the U.S. as the costs for medical care are expensive However, the coverage of a major health plan is based upon medical guidelines and the underwriters' evaluation of the applicant's medical history and the results of medical exams. Sometimes an applicant's health history may not meet the underwriters' medical guidelines. Regarding your parents' situation, we would recommend that they apply for a global major medical plan which includes coverage worldwide and in the U.S., such as Platinum Plan or ICE, to see whether or not they will be approved for coverage. Both Platinum Plan and ICE cover up to age 74, and these plans are renewable. If your parents are qualified for the coverage of either the Platinum Plan or ICE, then you can proceed with the green card applications. Please contact our specialists to discuss the benefits of the mentioned plans. Post Comments or Ask Questions
