Malaysia Burglary Targets U.S.
Company
8 Oct 2006
The Regional Security Office at U.S. Embassy Kuala
Lumpur reported the following: Some crimes have been aimed at American business with inside accomplish. An American private sector facility was the site of a break-in and
theft in western Malaysia on October 8 at 1:00 am. The incident
resulted in the loss of electronic equipment worth US $35,000, as
well as US $2,000 in cash, taken from a locked safe that was broken
open. The facility was ransacked, damaged and covered with yellow
chemical powder sprayed automatically from fire extinguishers.
The crime appears to have been carefully planned, and may have been
planned by persons with knowledge of the facility. Holes were found
in the perimeter fencing at strategic locations out of view of the
exterior CCTV cameras. Video footage from the cameras located at the
point of entry show images of 5-7 individuals entering wearing masks
and gloves at 1:00 am, and leaving the facility at 4:30 am. It
should be noted that the suspects turned off all interior lighting
once inside, in order to render the camera system useless. This
incident reaffirms the need and importance for U.S. companies to
conduct background investigations on overseas facility employees.
Authorities believe, based on the modus operandi, the suspected
organized group has been operating in the area for several months
and have committed similar crimes at other area facilities. Police
do not believe the facility was specifically targeted as an American
company.
