Americans Killed in Nairobi Carjacking

The Regional Security Office at U.S. Embassy Nairobi reported the following:

On Saturday afternoon, January 27, 2007 an American employee of U.S. Embassy Nairobi who was with several other family members was carjacked and robbed. The embassy employee and one other family member were killed in the incident.

The family had pulled off onto the service road on Waiyaki Way, about 5 miles past ABC place in the Othero area. They were waiting for a friend to guide them to the location where they were meeting for lunch. As they sat there waiting, a vehicle with four assailants pulled up next to them in an SUV that had been carjacked earlier in the day, and whose owner was tied up in the back.

We may never know the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting. Eyewitness accounts differ slightly, but it appears that the armed assailants approached the car yelling. The family members in the back of the car managed to get out fairly quickly, and when the front doors of the vehicle were opened, at least one of the assailants opened fire, hitting the driver and front seat passenger. According to eyewitnesses, the driver appeared to hesitate, lowering her arms, perhaps to hit the automatic door lock button.

U.S. Embassy Nairobi is working closely with Kenyan Police to find the persons responsible for this vicious and violent act. The car has been recovered from where it was abandoned in the Kimbiria area another 10 km along the road to Naivasha.

This tragic incident underscores the need for all of us to be ever vigilant at all times when operating a motor vehicle during both daylight and nighttime hours. If confronted by armed assailants while you are driving, it is recommended that you offer no resistance, and comply immediately and completely. Keep your hands raised and in sight of the assailants and your eyes averted so as not to convey any sign of hesitation or defiance.
