Islamabad Marriott
Hotel Attack
It was reported that on January 26, 2007, at approximately 2:37 p.m.
local time, a bomb exploded at the back area of the Marriott Hotel
in Islamabad, Pakistan. According to media reports, two people
were killed, and seven injured. Initial reports indicate that a
suicide bomber detonated himself at a rear entrance to the hotel
used primarily by Marriott hotel staff after a security guard
refused to allow him to enter the building. Preliminary reports
state that the hotel security guard and the bomber are the only
casualties. The Marriott is one of Islamabad's main hotels, and is
frequented by foreign travelers and local business people.

Reportedly, a number of vehicles in the
nearby parking area were damaged in the explosion. The hotel
sustained minor physical damage. Pakistani police officials have
cordoned off the area and an investigation is underway.
Republic Day
The date of the blast may be significant. January 26 is the Indian
national holiday, "Republic Day." The attack reportedly occurred
hours before the Marriott was due to host a reception later on
Friday marking the 58th Republic Day. It is not yet clearly
established that the attack was planned to coincide with the
holiday.

Pakistan
Security Tightened
Pakistani Interior Minister Aftab
Khan Sherpao stated the explosion was the work of "anti-state
elements who want to create unrest." Pakistani Interior Secretary
Syed Kamal Shah commented on the incident stating that the Pakistani
Government will raise the level of security in Islamabad to avoid a
recurrence of such incidents in the future. Outside of Islamabad, a
state of high alert has been declared in Karachi and Peshawar. There
has so far been no claim of responsibility. President Pervez
Musharraf has condemned the bombing and reiterated Pakistan's
"unwavering commitment
in the fight against extremism and terrorism."
October 28, 2004 Attack
Previously, the
Islamabad Marriott Hotel suffered a major explosion in October 2004.
Eight people were wounded in the blast, including one U.S. diplomat
and two Marriott hotel employees. Following the blast, the U.S.
Embassy barred embassy officials and travelers from visiting the
hotel. To view OSAC's PowerPoint presentation on the 2004 attack
