Ghana
Travel Warning
This Public Announcement is being issued to
urge U.S. citizens to exercise caution while traveling in Ghana on and immediately after
December 7, 2004. Ghana's parliamentary and presidential elections on that day are
expected to be generally peaceful, but the potential for politically based incidents of
violence is increased. This Public Announcement expires on December 15, 2004.
Northern Ghana in particular has a history
of conflict and could be volatile around election time. American citizens are urged to
avoid unnecessary travel to the Tamale municipal area and Yendi District in the Northern
Region of Ghana on and immediately after election day. Citizens are also advised to avoid
Bawku in the Upper West Region. If such travel is unavoidable, U.S. citizens are urged to
exercise extreme caution in these areas during this period.
