The U.S. Embassy Asunción
issued the following Warden Message on January 2, 2008:
American citizens residing or traveling
in Paraguay should be aware that historically during the holiday season
there is an increase in crime in Paraguay. The local police have brought
into Asuncion an additional 1,000 police officers who will be deployed in
the city until approximately January 8, 2008 in an effort to combat crime.
Paraguayan presidential primaries are underway and there is the potential
for marches and demonstrations to take place. It is recommended that
American citizens avoid these areas because there have been incidents of
violence in the past. If caught up in a demonstration or march, immediately
depart the area. If roads are blocked by protesters, find an alternate route
to avoid going through the roadblock.
American citizens residing or traveling in Paraguay are advised that the
Chief of the Paraguayan National Police has announced that all Paraguayan
National Police members have been ordered to remain in their quarters on
"RED ALERT" to face the escalation of criminal activity in the country.
